Honoring Those Who Served

Throughout our family’s history, brave men and women have answered the call to serve in the U.S. Military Service —the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard as well as those who proudly served in the National Guard. Each served in a different uniform, in different places and different times, but all shared a commitment to something greater than themselves.

Here, we preserve their stories, photographs, records, memories, and the moments that shaped their lives and ours. Some served during times of war; others served during peace. Some traveled far from home, while others served closer to family. Whatever their assignment or branch, their willingness to serve became part of our family story.

We remember where they served.
We honor what they sacrificed.
We celebrate who they were.
And we carry their legacy forward.

May these stories inspire future generations to appreciate the dedication of those who answered the call, proudly wore the uniform, and served our nation.

The United States Army

(August 4, 1790)

The Second Continental Congress authorized the creation of the Continental Army to provide a unified, professional fighting force for the American Revolutionary War. It was formed to fight British forces, protect the 13 colonies, and organize militia troops.

The United States Navy

(October 13, 1775)

Established to intercept British supply ships and protect colonial commerce during the Revolutionary War. Though disbanded after the war, it was re-established in 1794 to combat Barbary pirates and defend American trade.

The United States Marine Corps

(November 10, 1775)

The U.S. Marine Corps was founded at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, PA, by the Continental Congress to serve as landing forces for the Continental Navy during the American Revolution. They were formed to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security, and conduct amphibious raids.

The United States Coast Guard

(August 4, 1790)

Established by President George Washington when he signed the Tariff Act, authorizing the construction of 10 “cutters” to enforce federal trade laws and prevent smuggling. Proposed by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, this Revenue-Marine was created to ensure the collection of revenue crucial to the new nation’s economy

The United States Air Force

(September 18, 1947)

The United States Air Force (USAF) became an independent service in 1947. While the U.S. Army’s initial aeronautical division was formed in 1907, and the 1st Aero Squadron was formed in 1913.

Space Force

(December 20, 2019)

Established to protect U.S. interests in space.

The United States National Guard

(December 13, 1636)

The U.S. National Guard was formed when the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized local militia companies into three permanent regiments to defend against threats. The primary reason for its creation was to establish a dedicated, locally based defense force (the “[organized militia]” or “[citizen-soldiers]”) to protect settlers from attacks and maintain order, rather than relying on a professional standing army
