Family History of Military Service


This park located in Bellingham WA, was founded in memory of the boys of Whatcom county who fell in the World War 1917 – 1918. By the word war veterans – Mothers Club
June 14, 1775 — more than a year before the Declaration of Independence — the United States Armed Forces were established. As of 2025, the United States has been involved in 12 major wars and minor conflicts since its birth (independence from Great Britain). The 12 major wars include the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Indian Wars, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the War on Terror (which encompasses the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War).

1955-1975 – Vietnam War
A conflict in Southeast Asia
The Vietnam War (1954-1975) was a conflict in Southeast Asia pitting communist North Vietnam (Communist government led by Ho Chi Minh supported by the Soviet Union and China) and it’s allies including the Viet Cong (South Vietnamese communist guerrillas), against South Vietnam who was supported by other anti-communist nations and its primary ally, the United States, ultimately resulting in a communist victory and the unification of Vietnam. The Bornstein family had members enlist to fight in this war.

1939-1945 – World War II
Lasting six years and one day, the second WWII started on 1 September 1939 with Hilter’s invasion of Poland and ended with the Japanese surrender on 2, September 1945.
It was Dec. 7, 1941, the last peacetime morning that Whatcom County and the rest of America would enjoy until 1945. The attack on Pearl Harbor. The first Japanese warplanes swooped down on the American fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor at about 9:48 a.m. Pacific time. Not until 11:25 a.m. did radio networks begin breaking into regular Sunday programming to report the attack, which had ended just minutes before the first news flashes reached the mainland. More than 2,400 Americans died.
Once Congress had approved Roosevelt’s declaration of war, Bellingham was mobilizing. “A community seething with indignation at Japan’s unprovoked Sunday assault joined together Monday in an all-out war effort,” The Bellingham Herald reported.

1914-1918 – World War I
Also known as the Great War, was the first global conflict and one of the deadliest wars in history due to fighting on land, sea, and in the air.
It was a global conflict fought primarily in Europe between two coalitions: The Allies (led by France, The United Kingdom, Russia, Italy, Japan and later, the United States) against the Central Powers led by Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire).
The war ended with an armistice signed by Germany and the Allies on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The Bornstein family had members enlist to fight in this war.
